SIXTH ANNUAL ERIC BREINDEL COLLEGIATE JOURNALISM AWARD GIVEN TO
CLAREMONT MCKENNA COLLEGE STUDENT CHARLES C. JOHNSON

June 14, 2011 — (New York, NY) — The Eric Breindel Foundation today announced that the sixth annual Eric Breindel Collegiate Journalism Award will be given to Charles C. Johnson, a student at Claremont McKenna College. He will receive his award at a ceremony at the News Corporation headquarters in New York City on July 14, 2011.

The Foundation presents the award to the undergraduate journalist, columnist, editorial writer or reporter who best reflects the spirit of Mr. Breindel's writings: love of country and its democratic institutions as well as the commitment to preserve the freedoms that allow such institutions to flourish. It offers the winner a cash prize of $10,000, as well as a paid internship of his or her choice at either Fox News Channel, The Wall Street Journal, or the New York Post, plus residential housing for non-New York residents for the internship duration.

Charles C. Johnson, age 22, is a graduate of Milton Academy and Claremont McKenna where he studied government and economics. At Claremont, he edited the Claremont Independent and founded the Claremont Conservative, an award-winning daily campus website. His honors thesis is on the political thought of Calvin Coolidge. His written work has been published in The Claremont Review of Books, City Journal (online), National Review Online, The American (online), The Weekly Standard (online), Andrew Breitbart's sites, The Pope Center for Higher Education (online), American Thinker (online), and The New York Sun. Charles has won several awards this year, including the Harrison Fellowship at the Salvatori Center, the Intercollegiate Studies Institute's Honors Fellowship, the Bartley Fellowship at the Wall Street Journal, the Special Alumni Award at the Phillips Foundation, as well as the Eric Breindel Collegiate Award.

About Eric Breindel

Eric Breindel was one of the foremost journalists of his generation. He became the Editorial Page Editor of the New York Post in 1986. Breindel was appointed Senior Vice President of News Corporation in 1997. His nationally syndicated column appeared weekly in the New York Post and he was the moderator of a weekly national public affairs television program, Fox News Watch, on the Fox News Channel. A book of his columns, titled A Passion for Truth: The Selected Writings of Eric Breindel, was published in 1998.

In 1977, Eric Breindel graduated magna cum laude from Harvard College, where he was editorial chairman of the Harvard Crimson and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. After receivinghis A.B. from Harvard, Eric studied politics at the London School of Economics. He went to Harvard Law School where he received his J.D. in 1982.
